Tomorrow marks my first full week at work. I have to admit - I am truly enjoying my internship so far! The Hudson Valley is gorgeous, and the people here have been unbelievably kind so far.
It's still unbelievable that I was picked for this internship over other people, but I'm savoring it as much as possible.
I live in an adorable stone house with a great view of the Hudson River. I have great roommates. My supervisor is awesome (one of my tasks last Wednesday was "Take a hike. Get to know the park.") and everyone I've collaborated with so far is great.
I have a planner that I used in school, and since it's a 12 month planner, I'm using it for the duration of my internship as well. June, July, and August are already almost full of tasks I have to do, and it's great getting to look at my planner and knowing I can check them off one by one.
This week, I'm going to survey ten different sites in the valley where we have released Mile-a-Minute weevils in recent years. They can survive in the soil during the winter up to -30 to -40 degree Celsius, and they only eat the Mile-a-Minute weed so there is no concerns about them becoming invasive. One of my responsibilities is to survey sites and see how the weevils are affecting Mile-a-Minute populations. They're pretty cute guys - I held one on Friday and it's amazing how chill they are as juveniles. Adults - now that's a different story, apparently.
Yesterday was National Trails Day. I went up to Minekill State Park and met up with many other SCA interns. We had three tasks - build a 40' bridge, reinforce the banks of a stream, and do some trail work. We were split up in three groups, and my group focused on reinforcing the banks. Today, I'm pretty sore but it's a great feeling knowing that people and hikers will be able to enjoy our hard work for years to come!
I'm really excited for what the next few months will bring.
